Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in Ewing, NJ

Change may come very easily to you. Maybe, you prefer to take your time to adjust to new situations. You might meet new people and quickly connect! Or, you want to get to know someone's motivations before you open up to them. Do any of these sound like you or someone you know? These tendencies can affect the way we deal with our everyday lives. They can also help us understand why we respond to traumas and difficult situations in a certain way. That's where DBT comes in!

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) talks about biosocial theory. This is the idea that we are born with a certain temperament that interacts with the environment we grew up in.

These natural temperaments might include:

  • being easy to get along with
  • slow to warm up to new people
  • seeming "difficult" to others

Before you start to critique, know that there is nothing "wrong" with any of these temperaments! Temperaments give us information about:
  • someone's mood
  • a person's energy level
  • how they process sensory information
  • how sensitive they may be
  • how intensely they may feel
  • how social they may be
  • how easily they adapt to change.

How Does DBT Work?

DBT tries to balance acceptance and change strategies.  "Acceptance" involves recognizing there is pain in this world. And, we can't always change our triggers. But, we can reduce our suffering and change our relationship to the trigger.  Change involves problem-solving and doing things to change our circumstances.  DBT also involves honoring many truths, known as dialectics.  Validation is important, as well as working hard to make changes in one's life.

DBT consists of four primary modes of treatment. You may or may not need all four components. Your therapist can assess your needs at the initial appointment.
